Watch Out For That Tattooed Girl

« on: February 08, 2010, 08:54:33 PM »

My adult female beardie has been getting a gummed up eye for the past week. I take paper towel & wet it with warm water, and try wiping the gump off. It helps some and it usually stays clear for a couple days but gums up again. Any suggestions on what's causing it and what I may be able to help it clear up? Huh?

Take it to a vet?

You can do some searching on google, etc., but I would still go with a vet..  Is he still eating?  What substrate are you keeping him on?  Anything he could have rubbed his eye on?

Hrmm. Yeah other than some loose substrate getting in his eye im not soo sure on what could be causing this..

I would definitely keep an eye on it and hopefully it will clear up on its own.. The same thing happened to my Sav a few months ago.. She got a piece of dirt in her eye and it was closed up for a couple weeks and had gunk coming out of it but i kept an eye on it and it cleared up on its own after awhile.

It could also be caused by a piece of shed skin in the eye or trauma.  You can use Polysporin eye/ear drops every 12 hours, just for a couple of times; it contains the same medication as what is recommended in my Veterinary manual.  After that, you can rinse with undiluted normal saline (the same kind you would buy for contact lenses).  It will take a few days to a week to heal and his eye might still be irritated after a few days.

My only caution is that if it's trauma related, the eye needs to be examined for ulceration which requires an entirely different medication.  If you suspect trauma, then he needs to be seen by a Veterinarian.
